Are plants and trees covered by my home policy through my Warwick Insurance Agency?

Has the winter weather caused havoc in your garden? Homeowners often ask their Warwick insurance agency whether fallen trees and branches and damaged plants are covered by their home insurance policies.

A standard homeowners insurance policy offers coverage for damage to a home or other insured structures when it is hit by a tree or branches, whether the tree has been felled by hurricane, windstorm, hailstorm, or the weight of snow or ice. Homeowners insurance coverage may also pay for the tree to be removed if it hits an insured structure. You should file a claim with your own insurance company whether the tree that caused the damage was growing on your own property, a neighboring property, or came from further away.

Garden trees, plants, and shrubs are often covered by standard homeowners insurance policies for damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion, vandalism, theft, aircraft, and vehicles (other than vehicles owned by residents). Coverage is typically up to about 5% of the value of insurance on the home’s structure, and there may be per item limits.

Talk to your Warwick insurance agency if you wish to arrange insurance protection for your trees, shrubs, and plants against the risk of wind damage, or if you have mature trees or expensive plants that are not fully covered by standard insurance. Insurance cannot protect your garden from weather damage, but you may get comfort from knowing that your home insurance might provide some compensation!
